Running in the Dark
For some of us, running in the dark is a necessity. The manufacturers of technical apparel and accessories have gone a long way to provide us with 360 degree reflectivity, high number of candle power on our apparel and footwear, blinking lights for better visibility or better sight. As a speciality store, we have many and are in the process of introducing many more in the near future as days become shorter.
However, as I was running home the other day, along Loop Rd (or is it Woody Rd), I realized that there is more to running in the dark than just the technical aspect. There is the common side that may only come about from experience of running in different "visibility-challenged" conditions.
There are some among us who run or bike through the night and this may come short of their needs. My audience will be the casual or more experienced runners who due to necessity have to hit the pavements as the sun is going down or when it already has gone down. So here are my top favorite tips for running in the dark:
- Wear reflective clothing or accessories so you are visible. Make it 360 degrees. The more the better. Why it works: material products use a technology known as retroreflection. It helps the eye perceive light in low-light conditions. In more scientific terms, retroreflection occurs when light rays are returned in the direction from which they came. A large amount of reflected light is returned directly to the original light source, such as a car's headlights. Since very little light is scattered when the light is returned, retroreflective materials appear brightest to an observer located near the original light source.
- Have flashing lights on the front and back, preferably a white light in the front and a red one in the back. The idea is to let them see you are coming and see that you are ahead.
- Have a cap with a lengthy visor. I have found out that when running towards a light, the more upright posture I maintain, and the lower I keep my hat, the better my sight is. There is nothing worse than the "deer in a headlight" look that you get when those brights hit your eyes.
- When you run in the dark your sense of balance shifts due to a loss of peripheral vision, so I select routes that don't have a lot of obstacles. This makes sure you don't trip or worse yet jar a joint. Falling is bad but so is jamming a joint as you step off a 6" or 8" platform.
- I select routes that have limited traffic or good sidewalks. Moving obstacles are worse than stationary ones.
- I prefer running with a partner. Running with friends at night helps gets you out of the door when you might prefer to stay on the sofa, and it ensures you're safer than if you were pounding the pavements alone.
- If I am running on a sidewalk, I try to have the traffic to my back. If I am running on the road, then I try to have the traffic facing me.
- Your senses become more finely tuned when you run in the dark, which means it easier to assess how you feel. Try leaving your music at home for a change and use your night-time run to give your full attention to both your surroundings and how your body feels.
- When in doubt, step off to a safe spot and wait for any traffic to go by. It is not worth the contact. Never assume a driver can see you!
