Coach's
Corner - Running In the Dark
|
Running
in the Dark
 For some of us, running
in the dark is a necessity. The manufacturers of technical apparel
and accessories have gone a long way to provide us with 360 degree
reflectivity, high number of candle power on our apparel and
footwear, blinking lights for better visibility or better sight.
There is more to running in the dark than just technical
gear. Common sense that may only come about from experience of
running in different "visibility-challenged" conditions. Here are my
top favorite tips for running in the dark:
1. Wear reflective clothing or accessories so you
are visible. Make it 360 degrees. The more the better. Why it works:
material products use a technology known as retroreflection. It
helps the eye perceive light in low-light conditions. In more
scientific terms, retroreflection
occurs when light rays are returned in the direction from which they
came. A large amount of reflected light is returned directly
to the original light source, such as a car's headlights. Since very
little light is scattered when the light is returned,
retroreflective materials appear brightest to an observer located
near the original light source.
2. Have flashing lights on the front and back,
preferably a white light in the front and a red one in the back. The
idea is to let them see you are coming and see that you are
ahead.
3. Have a cap with a lengthy visor. When
running towards a light, the more upright posture you maintain, and
the lower you keep your hat, the better your sight is. There is
nothing worse than the "deer in a headlight" look that you get when
those brights hit your eyes.
4. When you run in the dark your sense of balance
shifts due to a loss of peripheral vision, so select routes that
don't have a lot of obstacles. This makes sure you don't trip or
worse yet jar a joint. Falling is bad but so is jamming a joint as
you step off a 6" or 8" platform.
5. Select routes that have limited traffic or good
sidewalks. Moving obstacles are worse than stationary
ones.
6. Run with a partner. Running with friends at
night helps gets you out of the door when you might prefer to
stay on the sofa, and it ensures you're safer than if you were
pounding the pavements alone.
7. If running on a sidewalk, try to have the
traffic to your back. If running on the road, then try to have the
traffic facing you.
8. Your senses become more finely tuned when you
run in the dark, which means it easier to assess how you feel. Try
leaving your music at home for a change and use your night-time run
to give your full attention to both your surroundings and how your
body feels.
9. When in doubt, step off to a safe spot and wait
for any traffic to go by. It is not worth the contact. Never assume a driver
can see you! | |
