| Dear *****, |
Summer
. . .
Remember the nights of summer The
symphony of crickets chirping The
sight of stars like a million angels And
in the morning, the smell of fresh dew Remember
the rainy days of summer With
the tapping at your window like little mice feet The
warm taste of rain drops on your tongue And
the warmth of the wet pavement Remember
these days of summer And
they will keep you warm
This poem was written by my
11yr old nephew, Sullivan Curry. It is a thoughtful reminder
of the passing season and an insightful view of the nature's
majesty. It is now time to put on your shoes, head out and
experience it on your own.

Columbus Marathon (Oct 12, 2009) - You
can do anything that you set your mind to...
Can you
run a 5K? Can you dream of running a marathon? Here are some words
of encouragement from Callie Brackett, a special person who just
achieved one of her life dreams...
"When
I started No Boundaries a year and a half ago, I never dreamed that
a full marathon was in my reach. In fact, I never thought much over
an 8K. I am a slower runner so I never thought anything more would
be in my reach. In October 2008 I ran my first half marathon and
loved every minute of it. That left only one thing - A FULL
marathon!! Crossing the finish line was a feeling that I will never
forget! Thank you Fleet Feet for giving me the running bug. A big
thank you to Robin Auerbach for the many run days and words of
wisdom and a huge thank you to my husband Craig who stayed by my
side the entire marathon and encouraged me. I couldn't have
done it without him. A few little words of wisdom - you can do
anything that you set your mind to, but there is no guarantee that
it will be easy. The feeling of accomplishment though, is worth
every minute! - Callie".
Here is the Fleet Feet Knoxville - Columbus
Crew. Way to go! We are so proud of
you.

River 50K (Oct 10, 2009) The mysterious path nobody
talks about!
Motivation has a unique flavor for everyone. Some get
it from a social group run, others find it in a solo long-long
run. Radu Stoica has an individualized approach to staying
motivated. Fresh from his last 50K in Virginia, he shares his
insight with us. Read

Duathlon (Oct 18, 2009)When the weather gets cold,
triathletes rush to duathlons to keep their multi-sports legs
trained for the next season. One of the last races put on by
Race Day Events, this race has a little bit for everyone. The
runners who are looking for that edge, the bikers who want to spice
us their rides, and the triathletes who don't want to give up.
If you have not tried one, mark your calendar for the Hammer
Duathlon in the spring and get a taste of run-bike-run
workout. It is intoxicating. Congratulations to
everyone who participated. Special recognition goes out to
Carlene Lascola and Paige Weidner for their great
performances. Check out the race results here.
Chicago Marathon (Oct 11,
2009)I did it! Thanks for all
your support through out my training. When I
met Heather, I was impressed with her determination. It is not
everyday you meet someone who "knows" the outcome. She did know and
on Oct 11, she demonstrated it to others. I think her next goal is
to get serious in multi-sports training and Fleet Feet Sports would
welcome her to our family of triathletes with open arms.
Congratulations also to our friend, Al Gassel and others from
Knoxville, who raced Chicago Marathon. It is a great race
whether this is your first or not. Harmony
Adoption Tour (Oct 5-9) A
Journey HomeAs I embarked on the Harmony Adoption
Tour 09, I knew of the importance of an adoptive family to a child
waiting for a new home. We had experienced it first hand with
our daughter. What I had not realized was the importance of
such a home to the many children that are currently in the system
and are nearing the time when they can no longer. 82 of us rode
together for many days and many miles. We visited schools, an
outdoor court setting, and even a town square. We saw an
adoption finalized, hung out with an entire elementary school, and
even gave interviews. But what we really did was to act in
unison to bring awareness to this important issue across the state
of Tennessee. I was proud of meeting other foster or adoptive
families that have enlightened the lives of many children. I
even rode with several during the ride. The bond we formed
will be memorable with a common goal of bringing a home to many of
these children. I hope and plan to ride next year with more stories
and more friends. The tour may be over for us but the journey
home is not over for those children. Learn more about
Adoption Tour here. Marine Corps Marathon (Oct 25,
2009)Running your first marathon at the age of 62 is
a challenge not many have taken. Dave Roberts met this
challenge head on and now has a running bug. He used the Air
Force half-marathon as a training run for the Marine Corps
Marathon. He is shown proudly displaying his medals from these
two races. Congratulations and thank you for sharing your
journey with us. So what's next? 2
marathons? |
Coach's
Corner - Running Rut
|
Tips to Get Out of
Your Running Rut
Runners are often creatures of habit
-- we run the same routes, at the same pace, usually during the same
time of day. Here are some ways you can avoid getting stuck in a
running rut, and make your runs more fun, interesting, and
motivating.
Get a Running Buddy Do you
usually run alone? Try to convince a friend or family member to come
along with you -- even if it's just once a week. Even if they're
slower than you, you'll find that helping someone else will help get
you excited about running again.
Play Beat the Clock Begin timing your
run as soon as you start. At your turnaround point, hit the split
button on your running watch/timer, or just take note of your time.
Try increasing your pace on the way back, with the goal of beating
your time for the first half (a "negative split"). Keep in
mind that individuals who are ill or injured should start at a lower
intensity level until they have regained their health.
Do a Random Interval
Workout Pick a landmark in the distance and pick up the
pace until you get to it. After you recover for a minute or two,
choose another landmark and speed up again.
Do Some Hill Repeats Plan a
route that has at least one hill in it and, when you come to it, run
up and down it a few times before moving on.
Count 'Em Up
If you run where there are a lot of other runners, try
this game: Pick out a specific article of clothing, such as black
running shorts, to look for during your run. Then count how many
runners you see wearing that piece of clothing. If you're running
with a friend, you can each guess how many you'll spot during the
run and then see who comes the closest.
Get With the Program Find a
training program that challenges your inner athlete and fits your
lifestyle.
