| Dear *****, |
Colors are
changing. Temperatures are dropping. Fall is here!
With
changing of season, it is a good time to take account of our
accomplishments and renew our commitments to ourselves and to our
families.
I feel so proud of our involvement with the
local running and triathlon community. From our Fleet Feet
Family, many have gone on to complete road races, from 5K to
marathon. Many others, have finish their first sprint,
olympic, and even half iron distance triathlons. Along the
way, everyone has come to realize their true inner strength and
stamina.
Personally, I have committed
myself during the first week of October to bring awareness to
adoption and foster care in the state of Tennessee. I have
been invited by Harmony Adoptions to
ride in the TN Adoption Tour
'09. Alongside 80 other riders, I will ride in 5 days from
Johnson City to Nashville, covering 433.7 miles. (Pictured right is the ride stop in
Chattanooga, TN). We will ride for the
over 400 children that are currently needing homes in the state of
Tennessee. As many of you know, adoption has blessed my
family. Join me by following my blog as I embark on this
travel. I hope one day to make the trip with my daughter Anna
who has brightened our lives for over 8 years.
Train smart, live well, and make a
difference!.

Marine
Mud Run (Sept 19, 2009) - What could make you
feel more like a child than running and playing in the mud.
Fleet Feet Sports was proud to sponsor the Marine Mud Run 2009,
consisting of over 14 obstacles, much mud and water, screaming
marines "you are NOT going to walk my hill", and a cheering crowd I
still don't know how I got my 8 year old to do it with me but the
picture proves that she did finish the military crawl an d the wall climb.
This is one event where I will use my old shoes and
clothes.
In addition to all of the fun we had, we collected a
box full of toys for the Toys For Tots. Thanks to Asics for
sponsoring the race with us.
Check out the race results here.
Farragut 5K (Sept 19, 2009) -
If mud and water was not your thing, this 5K in Farragut proved
to be the right place to be. Presented by West Knoxville
Chamber of Commerce, the 5k and the pet walk appeals to many in West
Knoxville area.
Check out the race
results here. Volunteer Tri (Sept 20, 2009)
-Congratulations to our own Leah Smith and Wendie Love to
dominating the Athena category in this fall triathlon put on by Race
Day Events. I know many were confused by the claim of flat
bike course around UT campus as anyone who knows UT campus knows
there are hills out there. Despite the wet conditions, many
braved this inaugural event that will be a season closer for many
short distance triathletes. Check out the race results here. Ragnar Relay (Sept 25-26,
2009)What do you get when you put together 12 people, 2
vans, 198 miles of running, 3 states? No sleep. That is right,
Fleet Feet Sports for the first time fielded a team of 12 for a
Ragnar Relay race starting in Maryland and ending in DC. It was much
like a Gilligan's Island production, although I am still trying to
figure out who was the Professor (Radu or Wayne) and who was
Gilligan and finally who was the Captain (Matt), Ginger (Melissa),
Mary-Ann (Eleanore), the Millionaire (Travis). I just don't
know where I fitted in this mix. All I know is if you want to
know someone really well, travel with them 36 hours in a
van. Atomic Half Ironman & Augusta Half
Ironman (Sept 27, 2009)Congratulations to our Tri 301
participants for completing their half-ironman distance
triathlon. Few competed locally in Leno ir City, and several
traveled to Augusta, GA for the inaugural Augusta 70.3
Triathlon. All had great stories of challenges on the course.
Way to achieve yours goals with a smile or carrying your first born
across the finish line. Check out Atomic Half Ironman race
results here.

Dancing Bear Lodge Bike Bash (Sept 10 - 13, 2009) - Several friends of Fleet
Feet Sports participated in the annual Bike Bash at the Dancing Bear Lodge in
Townsend, TN. Everyone enjoyed the bike rides around scenic
Townsend, gourmet meals served by the lodge, s'mores by the outdoor
fireplace and whimsical bike games. We will be sure to go back
next year for this event held every spring and
fall.
Run@Work Day (Sept
18, 2009) -
Maryville College
faculty, staff, and students gathered to run and walk around campus
for 35 minutes to celebrate RRCA National Run@Work Day.
National Run@Work Day is an effort by the Road Runners Club of
America to increase commitment to health and fitness by asking
people to run or walk from their workplace for a minimum of 35
minutes. Both runners and walkers participated in the event at
Maryville College, and despite a rain shower that hit campus right
as the event started 36 individuals met the challenge and completed
35 minutes of exercise. Participants ranged from fast runners
to walkers, several of whom were pregnant (no, I didn't count them
as two participants!). At the conclusion of the event, door
prizes were raffled off, including gift certificates donated by
Fleet Feet Knoxville, and Maryville College "Smart People Sweat"
shirts. Everyone seemed to have a great time despite the rain,
with one person even commenting that we should end every week with a
group run. We are all looking forward to next year's National
Run@Work Day with hopes of sunnier skies and greater
participation.

Coach's
Corner - Blisters
|
How do I get
blisters? . . . How do I prevent them? . . .
How do I treat them?
Many of you are training for marathons, half
marathons and the 3 day breast cancer walk. These events involve
exceptionally long periods of time on your feet. In the process of
the extended time, your feet sweat, they heat up and excess pressure
and friction occur. Friction from both shoes and socks can cause
blisters. Blisters form when the outer layer of skin separates from
the inner layers the space between fills with fluid. The blister can
be painful or even get infected. And many of you know there is
nothing worse than getting a blister in the middle of your event
causing you to slow down or even stopping. Let go over a few ways to
prevent blisters and if you do get them how to treatment.
Blister Prevention
First, make sure that your shoes fit correctly. Shoes
that are too tight or too loose will cause excessive pressure and
friction. Spend the time when purchasing your shoes to make sure you
have a proper fit. Second, your socks should also fit well. Loose or
tight fitting socks will lead to problems. Also choice socks that
wick away moisture from your feet. Avoid 100% cotton socks. A sock
with a cotton/polyester blend works better at keeping your feet dry.
Third, protect "hot spots". Those areas that tend to blister should
be treated before the event using second skin, Body Glide, petroleum
jelly, tape, etc. Fourth, keep your feet as dry as possible. Avoid
puddles and wet areas when running. Lastly, if necessary, change
your socks during the event if they get too wet from sweat. It is
better to take the time to prevent the blister instead of limping
along the course.
Blister
Treatment If you develop a blister and it doesn't hurt,
it isn't infected just leave it alone and don't break it. Wash it
with soap and water and apply any topical antibacterial ointment and
a bandaid. The fluid inside the blister will get absorbed and the
remainder of the loose blistered skin will dry up and peel off. If
the blister bothers you because it is too big or in an area that
irritates with activity then you can drain the blister. Again wash
the area with soap and water, and then drain the fluid using a clean
needle, pin or scissors by puncturing a hole into it. After draining
the fluid, apply topical antibacterial ointment and a bandaid. If
you notice any pus or blood, you should seek professional help.
