| Dear *****, |
Amazing!
Truly Amazing! On Valentine's day, I was reminded again why I do
what I do. We completed yet another training program by
helping many runners run their first 10K and half-marathon. In the
process, our group's drive and motivation truly amazed me. Their
sense of empowerement and inspiration is contagious.
As we
begin our spring No Boundaries Begin To Run training program, our
attention shifts to the new people now training under our
care. We will work hard to introduce this group to the notion
that there is No
Boundaries to achieving their dreams.

2009 Training Group
Train smart, live well, and
make a difference!.

Meet the
Marathon Pacers
|
|
Fleet Feet Sports is
proud to sponsor the Pacers for the Covenant Health Knoxville
Marathon.
3:30: Erica Tedford is a tiny dynamo.
Erica is 24 and an East Tennessee native. She works at Blackberry
Farms and placed 3rd overall in her first marathon.
3:45: Jose Salas runs as part of JTV
Running Team where also maintains the team's blog site. He has
run several marathons in his career, most recently setting a PR of
3:16 at the Columbus marathon last fall.
4:00: Mark Evans is joining us for the
second year as a pacer. Mark was all smiles in last year's marathon,
maybe that's why his dental practice is called Natural Smiles!
4:15: Ken Sirois & Jack Kilislian.
Ken is pacing Knoxville for the third time and has run the full
marathon each year. Ken and his wife Shirley have run hundreds of
marathons all over the world and are the proud parents of a standard
poodle named Annie. Jack has run dozens of ultramarathons and can be
seen at races all over Knoxville and beyond both racing for himself
and pacing his friends. Jack is the charming bachelor of the bunch
and teaches math at UT.
4:30: Brian Puckett is pacing for the
third time. Brian lives in Nashville but has family in the area, so
he visits often. Brian is super dependable and his enthusiasm for
running is infectious.
4:45: Terry Higgins is new to pacing but
has unofficially paced his friends and strangers in the hundreds of
events he has completed. Terry likes the most challenging events he
can find and thinks of himself as an ambassador and tour guide in
Knoxville because he's proud of his hometown race.
5:00: Robin Auerbach is known as a human
metronome. Robin can run a steady marathon at any time on any course
on any given day. Robin is all smiles and quiet encouragement. Any
day running with Robin is a good day.
5:30: Michael Daugherty is back for more
after sitting out a year. Michael paced the 2007 marathon and has
been seen running and volunteering all over Knoxville for the last 5
years. Michael has seen his share of both success and disappointment
in running and looks forward to being there when the hard work of
thousands pays off.
6:00: Nicole Howe is pacer captain for
the third year. Nicole spends most of her time pacing her son Connor
through 5Ks, but occasionally takes time for herself to race trails,
marathons, ultramarathons, and triathalons. Nicole is well known all
over Knoxville for taking on way too many responsibilities. Nicole
is a talker, guaranteed to distract you from the brutal reality that
this race really is in the foothills of the Smoky Mountains.
Half Marathon Sweepers, 4
Hours: Cheryl Hadian &
Valerie Coffey These two ladies are longtime friends and
their camaraderie is magnetic. Walking the half marathon with them
will be like a calorie burning, gab session where you'll feel like
you have two new best friends at the finish, because you will.
Full Marathon Sweepers, 7
Hours: Carl Sexton, Zane
Hagy, & Eddie Reymond (also known as the three
musketeers) are all former directors of the Knoxville Marathon.
While they're not on the front lines of the marathon anymore,
they've definitely got it's back. If you find yourself in their
company on marathon Sunday, you may not have your best finish time,
but you'll have a great time! |

It is all About Your Marathon
Attitude
 Your mental attitude is
crucial for marathon running, if you can cope with the stress of
HITTING THE WALL, this is the fatigue that you feel during the
second half of the race, you are more likely to endure the race and
run to your full potential.
You may be very fit, but if you
are not psychologically prepared you may find the race overwhelming,
say a researcher. The key to success seems to be linked to your
expectations of performance.
Dr. Andrew Lane, Sports
Psychology Doctor, carried out a research study ahead of the London
Marathon. He questioned marathon runners who had raced in last
year's event in London. Among his interviewees were runners
who ran for a charity called Cardiac Risk in the Young. He
questioned them before and after the race. He concluded that there
were two groups of runner types.
- Group 1 had a
positive attitude before the race. Their anxiety levels were
healthy, they were excited but mentally calm at the same time - they
were highly motivated during the race. When fatigue hit them in the
second half of the race they did not find the experience unbearable.
- Group 2 felt anger and depression (they said)
during the second half of the race. They felt dissatisfied and
frustrated after the event. Everyone in this group did not have as
positive an attitude before the race as the first group. They were
very anxious and experienced negative emotions (before the race).
Dr Lane said "We can't say for sure why this happened, but
we can speculate that people who coped better were more confident in
their ability and able to cope better during the most challenging
parts of the race. Anxiety is motivational when coupled with
feelings of excitement and calmness but harmful when coupled with an
emotional profile characterized by feeling depressed, tense, tired
and confused." However, none of the people in the second group
(the more negative ones) said that they would never run in a
marathon again.
According to Dr. Lane, it helps if you are
realistic about your performance. "Know about your comfortable
running speed and stick to it. The group who were positive about
their race had gone at a steady rate. Those who bombed through at
the beginning and didn't drink properly and who drank 'power' drinks
when they weren't used to it, had negative responses after the
race."
There still is time for runners participating in the
Knoxville Marathon, it is never too late to improve your mental
fitness for race day. Try imagining how bad it is going to be in the
worst parts on race day and look at strategies for dealing with it.
We know music can be functional and some runners may benefit from
fixing a song in their head. Talking to yourself during the race in
a positive way is also useful and believing that you can do it. It
helps to prepare mentally for when you think you will 'hit the
wall'. | |
