New Year's Day 5K (Jan 1,
2009) -
Folks from our Long Distance and Next Steps training groups
brought in the New Year by running the New Year's Day 5K.
Fleet Feet Sports was proud to be a sponsor of the race.
Congratulations to everyone for kicking off the New Year with a
commitment to an active lifestyle.
The race results can be found here. Walt Disney Half Marathon (Jan 10, 2009)
-
In January's newsletter you met Craig & Callie
who ran the Disney Half Marathon with Team T.S.A. (Tourette's
Syndrome Association). They surpassed their fundraising goal for
T.S.A and wanted to thank everyone for helping them meet this
challenge. Despite both having injuries during the race, they kept
going and crossed the finish line (couldn't let all their supporters
down). Way to Go!
Calhoun's 10-Miler (Jan 24,
2009) -
The Long Distance training group met
their goal by running the Calhoun's 10 Miler. Many set PRs and both
the men's and women's Fleet Feet teams place 4th in the team
category. But what we are most proud of is the team spirit and
comaraderie. Congratulations!
The race results can be found here.

Covenant Kid's Run (Jan
24, 2009) -The weather was perfect for the kids to
start off their quest to complete a marathon by March 28.
Don't forget to join in the kid training runs at the store every
Thursday at 5:00pm.

The Healing Power of
Sleep
 Never underestimate
the power of a few Z's in relation to your training. It could be the
element your training has been missing!
People spend
nearly a third of their life sleeping, yet they never schedule it in
the way they would a workout or having healthy eating habits. For
athletes to perform at their peak, it is imperative that they get
the right amount of sleep for their body. The trend to push sleep
aside to make room for busier lives shows no signs of subsiding and
in turn is creating an epidemic of people with sleep deficit.
There is mounting evidence that insufficient or poor quality
sleep doesn't just compromise short-term physical performance, it is
also associated with a host of serious health problems including
weight gain, insulin resistance, type-2 diabetes and cardiovascular
disease. Sleep deprivation is a growing problem, and one that can
significantly impair performance in athletes. It's also an area
that's easily overlooked in the rush to fit training schedules
around work and family commitments. If you suspect you're not
getting all the sleep you need, addressing your sleep shortage may
pay far more dividends than an extra training session here and
there.
A few ideas that may help ensure an extra productive
nights sleep:
Avoid drinks that contain caffeine
after 3PM
Avoid alcohol three-hours before
bedtime; it may help you fall asleep, but can lead to disturbed
sleep later in the night
Don't go to bed with a full or empty
stomach
If you are currently suffering from
sleep problems, try to increase your intake of magnesium-rich foods
(ie, beans, peas, lentils, nuts, seeds, whole grains, and green
leafy vegetables)
Make sure your bed is comfortable
Keep your bedroom well ventilated,
quiet and cool
Go to bed when you are tired, not when
it is 'time for bed'
Take time to wind down before bed
Try adding 1-2 hours of sleep every
night for two weeks and see how your performance improves So in
short, don't put a good night's sleep on the back burner. Pay
attention to the quality and amount of sleep you are getting and
make sure you are performing at your absolute best every day!
