Racing for a Cause
|
Team in Training is
probably the most widely known charity associated with running but
two of Fleet Feet Knoxville's runners are running for a cause we
rarely hear of, Tourette's Syndrome. When Callie & Craig
Brackett started running with the first No Boundaries training
program they had no idea within a few months that they would catch
the running bug. Now as they prepare to conquer their second Half
Marathon at Walt Disney World on January 10th, they are running for
a charity that means a lot to them.
Callie was diagnosed
with Tourette's Syndrome 5 years ago. With statistics like 1 in
1000, Tourette's is fairly unknown and has a somewhat bad
stereotype. Tics, both physical and audible are the outword signs of
this disorder. Callie is fortunate in that medication masks her
symptoms. As part of Team T.S.A. the Brackett's are raising
money with will be used to pinpoint the cause, find a cure, and
control the effects. According to the Brackett's, the main reasons
they signed on to help Tourette's Syndrome Association was the fact
that they also fund education and battle media stereotypes. On the
road to the Disney World Half Marathon the Brackett's have logged a
little over 140 training miles.
They have also almost
reached their goal to raise $2000 for the Tourette Syndrome
Association. If you would like to donate, please visit http://www.active.com/donate/09WD/Bracketts.
Running isn't
just a way to improve your health, it can also be a great way to
help change the world!

| At the
Races |
Reindeer Run 5K (Dec 6,
2008) -
Last but not least in the Triple Crown series, The Foothill
Striders did a great job with their 5K on a cold morning.
Congratulations to all participants, and specially to
Eleanore and Travis for placing in their
respective categories.
The race results can be found here.
Jingle Bell 5K Run (Dec 13, 2008) -
The Arthritis Foundation's Jingle Bell Run brought out the
Fleet Feet Elves for some holiday mischief. As you can see
several of the participants in the Fleet Feet 10K Training program
participated in the Jingle Bell Run "decked to the halls".
The race results can be found here.
Rocket City Marathon (Dec 13,
2008) -
Boston Bound 2010! Several of our
Fleet Feet Family members have shown interest in making it to
Boston Marathon in 2010. Here are Anna and Shahin as
they cross the finish line under the qualifying time
(notice Anna is missing one shoe but her directive from mom was
"don't slow daddy down since he has to make the
time". What a trooper). So needless to
say, road trip in 2010 to Boston is on the
books. Great job to Huntsville Track Club for
organizing this event and to Nike and Fleet Feet Sports Huntsville
for supporting it.
The race results can be found here.
Holiday Lights Run (Dec 18, 2008) -
Who says all runs have to be work and no play? Here is
our Thursday night group run/walk searching through our
neighborhood for santa's sleigh.
Although we had trouble caroling in unison, everyone
was overflowing with Christmas cheer. Our walk group even
found Santa and the kids got a chance to whisper in his ear.
Everyone returned safely back to the store
for refreshments and a social break. So add this to your
list of runs for next year and "be good for goodness sake"!

From now until April 1st, Once a Runner is available
exclusively at Fleet Feet Sports. Once a Runner is often
considered the paradigm of all running novels, winning the
acclaim of such running legends as Frank Shorter, Alberto Salazar,
and Bill Rodgers. Being out of print for years it has become one of
the most sought-after books in the world of running, often selling
for hundreds of dollars online. Superfeet Black DMPSuperfeet
has developed a new model to their line of premium insoles, the
Black DMP. It has a unique 3- layer foam system
featuring their new 'Dynamic Moulding Process' to provide
comfortable, therapeutic support for sensitive feet. The top cover
is designed to help decrease friction due to excessive motion, and
the multi-layered, self- moulding foam helps distribute planter
pressure and improve fit. The skegs under the heel of the 3/4 length
stabilizer cap provide stability posting for the rear foot. The
Superfeet DMP Insole is ideal for people who find conventional
orthotics uncomfortable. Brooks Adrenaline GTS 9The
Adrenaline is back again with the signature midfoot wrap, forefoot
capture, and progressive support. The GTS 9 model gives your feet
greater breathability with fewer overlays, and an
upgraded sockliner for softer step-in comfort. New Balance 769grooves designed
to bend with the natural movement of the forefoot, all featuresNewly
added to the shoe is the Abzorb DTS technology, which contains
layers of cushioning to provide superior cushion to the heel strike.
The 769 also has an updated shoe last, blown rubber
added to the forefoot, and more detailed flex to improve the fit.
Mizuno Wave Inspire
5The lightweight Inspire 5 features a responsive
co-polymer midsole and shock-absorbing cushioning in the heel and
forefoot. The air mesh upper and the full-length midsole ventilation
system ensure long-lasting breathability and comfort . The X10 outsole delivers the
perfect blend of control and cushioning. Nike Zoom Structure Triax+
12The Triax has breathable sandwich mesh with supportive
overlays, and it welds for a secure and lightweight fit. It has firm
heel counter for pronation control, Zoom Air in the heel and
forefoot, and dual density, decoupled rounded Crash Pad for gait.
Nike Lunar Trainer
The Lunar Trainer uses Nike's revolutionary new cushioning
system, Lunarlite foam. Nike's lightest weight and most responsive
cushioning material to date, Lunarlite foam is 30% lighter and works
to distribute force across the foot. With each footfall, pressure is
dispersed-protecting the foot from injury as well as pain and
fatigue-a huge benefit in a shoe meant for
mileage.

Goals for the New
Year
 Need help in achieving
your running goals? Read Jeff
Galloway's article on Defining Your Goals, . . . it is a good
first step . . .
Most of the runners don't have
specific time goals. This is fine. Running is a free-form activity
that empowers you to choose from a variety of training programs,
races, and enriching running experiences. There are, however, some
aspects of running that are more rewarding than others, and time
improvement can be frustrating. So if you want to train for a time
goal this year, at least look at the following background
experiences which can keep you motivated when the watch doesn't say
what you want it to.
Your
Tools: A Journal and a Good Training Guidebook A
journal will help you learn from mistakes and remind you of the good
experiences. Most want to have the information listed so that they
can quickly fill it in after a run.
Running Enjoyment Find a way to
enjoy parts of every run-even the harder runs. Most of your runs
should be....mostly enjoyable. Schedule a social or a scenic run
every week. There are certain trail areas, for example, that I enjoy
every time. When runners burn out, they usually have been
eliminating pleasurable runs. Take control of your running enjoyment
to make sure you're having some fun.
Stay Injury-free When I review
the journals of injured runners I often find the causes of aches and
pains. Make a list of past problems, and the workouts, lack of rest,
etc. that brought them on. You can then make adjustments to prevent
injuries. Above all, at the first sign of a possible injury, take
more days off and treat it.
