Fleet Feet Sports Knoxville Newsletter
September 2007
Dear *****,
With the arrival of fall, we set our sights to cooler weather and the return to school.  For some, that means lesson plans and classes.  For others, it means more time for sports.  Whether you like to hit the books or hit the road, we urge you to continue taking steps towards a more active and healthier lifestyle.

Remember a recent TV commercial?  Two young boys are playing a cool motorcycle video game.  Their rider comes alive and walks out of the TV with a message for the wide-eyed boys:  "I would not be here if this is all I did as a kid, so get outside and ride your motorcycle".  Our message is simpler.  Just get active and see where it takes you.

Our promise is that we will be there to support you, every step of the way.  That is our Fitlosophy (TM) and nothing short of it.

Train Smart and Live Well,

- Shahin

  • The Lesedi Project
Balega (the maker of those incredible moisture-wicking socks we carry) is an international company based in the United States with roots in South Africa.  They have founded the Lesedi Project in partnership with Fleet Feet Sports to give back to the South African culture and community on which Balega relies.

The Lesedi Project directly supports the Ethembeni school which is home to some 300 disabled and disadvantaged children. Ethembeni means "place of hope" and that is exactly what it has become for the physically and visually disabled children who both live and study there.

At participating Fleet Feet Sports stores you can find:

    Beadwork
    - a traditional Zulu craft is a skill that is taught to the children at the school.  Balega has commissioned the school to make a series of beadwork necklaces & bracelets.

    Music CD
    - Miraculous Feet: A Run Through Wickedly Fresh South African Music - a blend of traditional and contemporary African music.

All profits generated by the sale of beadwork and CDs are returned directly to the school and go towards the costs of boarding, education, and operation.

In October Fleet Feet Sports Knoxville along with Balega will host a CD Release Party!  The evening will include music (of course), great food, drinks and specials at the store.  Stay tuned for more details....

    Need to Get Motivated?

Ok... it's hot out there!  Do you need to get excited about walking, running and exercising.  You just really, really want to get outside and get moving. BUT.... something is missing. You just can't get excited, you feel like a slug (hey.... that's not just me talking), and you need some inspiration to get up off that couch, away from the A/C and computer. Let's see if we can find some GREAT ideas to get you up and out and back on your exercise track!

Pick an attainable goal!   Pick a goal you know you can do, but add a little bit on incentive to it. There are so many 5K run/walks around that you can strive for... OR how about that half marathon or marathon you have been thinking about. The fall marathons/half marathons are around the corner - you certainly have time to train for them. NOW is the time to begin when all you need to do is check it out and start slowly.

Don't time yourself!   Just go for a walk or run and don't worry about how fast or slowly you are going. Just enjoy the fact that you are out there moving your body. Walk down to the mailbox and back... not so bad... do it one more time. Tomorrow... do it again, but go past the mailbox to the second light post. You get what I'm saying? Leave your watch at home. Start slowly - absolutely no huffing and puffing. If you are doing that... you are running/walking too fast. Check to see if you can talk or sing... if you can't - YOU ARE MOVING TOO FAST!

Try something new!   Get yourself some new, bouncy well fit shoes and socks and you immediately have a spring in your step and the exercise world looks a little brighter. The same can be said for a new workout outfit. Find one that fits right and just says - GET OUT THERE... YOU CAN DO IT~ and feel good about yourself when you do! Check out the cool skirts ... now THAT says "Go Run!"

Find a mantra!   Here's my last tip for today... Find a saying that helps you get started or go a little farther or faster when needed. Some find song lyrics work for them and repeat the lyrics over and over. Try this little mantra apropos for our hilly terrain...." Up and over...hills make you STRONG!"

                         .  .  .  Promoting Wellness Together

The Tennessee Cancer Specialists with support from Fleet Feet Sports have been promoting a healthy, active lifestyle for their employees.  Teams from the multiple offices supported one another in getting active.

    Employees and family members met
on a hot Saturday morning to walk/run 3 miles on the greenway.  Spirits were high as everyone finished their goal. Congratulations for taking steps to achieve to a healthier lifestyle.

Check out the photos from the walk.  The plans are underway for another walk in the fall with a Halloween theme.

    Supporting Coporate Wellness Programs
Here at Fleet Feet Sports, not only do we want to initiate an active lifestyle, we also like to reward one. When a company decides to embark on its own wellness program, we want to be a part of that effort in any way we can. The Wellness Committee at the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources (CUPA-HR) is leading such a program. "Being an association dedicated to human resources, we pride ourselves on offering many of the best benefits for our own employees," said Andy Brantley, CEO. Brantley and the association's directors unanimously approved the healthy move. The new program focuses on five pillars: mind, body, spirit, community and financial responsibility.

Developing a comprehensive wellness initiative should include not only activity and structure, but also incentives. The incentives provide short term benefits while the program as a whole provides long term gains. Sometimes, one is not possible without the other especially in certain high risk or busy populations. There are two incentives that have proven to be effective. One is good old cash. The other is time off.

Suzi Bowen, chair of the CUPA-HR Wellness Program and a recent graduate of Fleet Feet Sports Triathlon 101 program, decided to include Gift Certificates to Fleet Feet Sports as part of CUPA-HR's incentive program. The association has also invited Shahin, Fleet Feet owner, to make presentations for the employees, the first of which will include motivation. It'll be an interesting sight to see Shahin motivate a group of already motivated people! But then again, we never shy away from an easy task. We love it when others, like Suzi and CUPA-HR, are leading the way to a healthier lifestyle and allowing us to ride shotgun.
