| Dear *****, |
|
Happy holidays to all!
Have you ever considered what the holiday season means
to you? With the holidays come the joy of visiting family and
friends, finding time to renew your faith, or escaping to
private solace to find yourself. Also, with the holidays
come the stress of gift giving, pressure of taking better care of
yourself, or providing more care for those that
need your help or are less fortunate.
In our second holiday season in Knoxville, we have
come to appreciate the Fleet Feet Family we have built around
us. We are blessed with good friends and a great
community. Throughout the year, we have tried to share
with you our philosophy of working hard and playing hard. In
this edition, we have gathered new ideas on training, gift
giving, and finding that special time for
yourself. So read and enjoy.
As I get ready for my first Father-Daughter dance
this Saturday, I have already picked out the gift I would like
to receive this holiday season. Anna and I are
planning to dance a Tango. Neither of us are trained but
we are doing our best by following the steps we
found online. It will not be the best Tango, but will be our
best. During a "promenade" practice, the excitement in my
daughter's eyes gave a glimpse of the gift that I most
desire. When I step across that dance floor with my 7
year old, I will receive my best holiday
gift. And she does not even know it. Have you picked
yours?
Train smart, live well, and make a
difference!.

heart rate monitors (home diagnostic device), compression socks and
ankle/knee braces (joint support)? We didn't realize this, but a
customer of ours did and she avoided losing unspent funds at the end
of the year.
So, take a look at your plan, look at your
unspent funds and think about how you may make good use of those
funds before you lose them at the end of the year

Cross Knox 15K (Nov 11,
2008) -
On its second year, Cross Knox continues to introduce
large numbers to the beautiful greeways crossing across Knoxville.
Even the frigid morning (around 19 degrees at the start) could not
keep the motivated runners home. Fleet Feet
Sports is honored to be one of the supporters of this event.
Congratulations to all participants,
and specially to Olivia and Callie for placing
in their respective categories.
The race results can be found here.
 Rutledge Full
& Half Marathon (Nov 15, 2008) - Fleet Feet Sports
was proud to be a sponsor of the Rutledge Half & Full marathons.
Despite the threat of the rain, runners braved the weather to
complete the inaugural event. Congratulations to Stacy Zazado (4:10)
and Randall Baggett (4;38) who ran their first marathons
& Olivia and Kelly for finishing their 2nd half-marathons under
the watchful eyes of their teammates Robin &
Bill. Robin paced them and Bill cheered them on, showing
that friendship knows no weather.
The race results can be found here.
Buddy's
Race Against Cancer 5K (Nov 16, 2008) - A great
finish to another successful No Boundaries - Begin to Run 5K
training program. Despite the cold morning, over 30 joined
together to accomplish their mission of completing their first or
their best 5K. Regardless of the outcome, they were already
winners. Cheryl and I are proud to be part of this elite
group. Many have decided to join our Next Steps 10K training
program. Congratulations to all who participated. The race
results can be found here. Checkout

What to Wear in Winter
Weather
Dressing for cold
weather running can be a challenge. When
running in cold weather always remember one word -
LAYERS.
 The key to winter running
dressing, especially with your upper body, is layering. Not only do
layers trap body heat, they allow sweat to move through the layers
of clothing. The moisture is wicked away from your first layer to
your outer layers, and then evaporates. If you dress so that you are
warm at the start of your run you will probably be over heated at
the end. As you generate heat during your run you can remove layers
to avoid overheating. You're going to warm up once you get moving,
so you should feel a little bit chilly when you start your run. A
good rule of thumb: Dress as if it's 20 degrees warmer outside than
it really is.
Head and
Neck
- Thermal hat: On cold
days, you'll lose a reported 40% of your heat from your head, so
it's important to keep it covered. A fleece or wool hat is
perfect for keeping your head warm during winter runs. You can
easily tuck it into your pants if you feel like you're starting to
overheat.
- Neck Gaiter: Often worn
by skiers, a neck gaiter can be extremely valuable on a frigid,
windy day to protect your neck and face. You can pull it up over
your mouth to warm the air you're breathing in, which is
especially helpful when you first start your run.
- Chapstick/Vaseline:
Protect your lips from chapping with some Chapstick or Vaseline.
You can also use the Vaseline on your nose and cheeks (or anywhere
else on your face) to prevent windburn and chapping.
Upper
Body
- Wicking Base Layer: The
layer closest to your body should be made from a synthetic wicking
material, such as DryFit, Thinsulate, Thermax, CoolMax,
polypropolene, or silk. This will wick the sweat away from your
body, keeping you dry and warm. It's very
important to make sure you don't wear cotton for this layer
because once it gets wet, you'll stay wet. When it's above
40 degrees F, you can usually wear just a long-sleeve base layer.
- Insulating Layer: Your
second or middle layer, which is needed for very cold weather
(below 10 degrees F), should be an insulating material, such as
fleece. This layer must continue wicking moisture away from the
skin. It should have the perfect balance of trapping some air to
keep your warm, yet release enough vapor or heat to avoid
overheating. Some fabrics suggested for your second layer:
Akwatek, Dryline, Polartec, polyester fleece, Microfleece,
Thermafleece and Thermax.
- Wind- and Water-proof Outer
Layer: This layer should protect you against wind and
moisture (rain, sleet, snow), but at the same time allow both heat
and moisture to escape to prevent both overheating and chilling.
It's a good idea to wear a jacket with a zipper for this layer, so
that you can regulate your temperature by zipping it up and down.
Suggested outer layers: ClimaFit, Gore-Tex, Microsuplex, nylon,
Supplex, and Windstopper. If it's between 10 and 40 degrees F, you
can usually get away with a wicking base layer and an outer layer.
- Gloves/Mittens: You can
lose as much as 30% of your body heat through your extremities, so
it's important to cover those hands. On cold days, wear gloves
that wick away moisture. When it's extremely cold, mittens are a
better choice because your fingers will share their body heat.
Lower
Body
- Tights/Running Pants:
Your legs generate a lot of heat so you don't need as many layers
on your lower body. You can usually wear just a pair of tights or
running pants made of synthetic material such as Thermion,
Thinsulate, Thermax, Coolmax, polypropolene, and/or silk. If it's
below 10 degrees F (temperature or wind chill), you may want to
consider two layers on your lower body: a wicking layer of tights,
and a wind-proof layer such as track pants.
- Socks: Never wear cotton
socks (in cold or warm weather) when running because they
won't wick away the moisture, leaving your feet wet and prone to
blisters. Instead, be sure to wear a good pair of wicking socks
made of fabrics such as acrylic, CoolMax, or wool (in the winter).
