| Trail
Running |
Getting off the roads
and onto trails is a fun and exciting way to shake up your running
routine. There are so many benefits to trail running: the soft
dirt of trails has less impact on your joints than asphalt; you
strengthen different muscles that you do not use while road running;
and the biggest benefit, there is a rejuvenation of spirit that
comes from being surrounded by nature.
I met Hendree last year in our first few months of being
open. I had never met anyone so full of energy and passion for
trail running. After months of talking about our interests, I
finally asked him why he runs and what he thinks about when he
runs. Later this year, Hendree and I plan on running Mount
LeConte. Who knows! Next may be the Grand Canyon's rim to rim.
In Hendree's words: To answer your question
- why I run.
I run because I am fulfilled
both physically and spiritually by the rhythms and challenges of
running.
I run because I enjoy training to achieve a
goal.
And I run because running delivers me to a place, both
physically and spiritually, of fitness and balance.
I often
have my best thinking and praying time when I am running.
I
am almost exclusively a trail runner.

Runners' High: Joggers Live
Longer
That runner's high
may translate into a lot of other long-lasting health benefits, a
new report from an ongoing study suggests. Researchers have found
that regular jogging, or any consistent aerobic exercise, in middle
age and late in life may reduce people's risk of disabilities and
help them live longer and healthier.
The study published in
the Archives of Internal Medicine tracked two groups of people -
"ever-runners" and "never-runners" - over two decades beginning in
1984. With her colleagues, lead author Dr. Eliza F. Chakravarty, an
immunologist and rheumatologist at Stanford University School of
Medicine, studied 538 people who run regularly, the majority of whom
were selected from a national running club, along with a control
group of 423 people who never run, drawn from the faculty and staff
at Stanford. All participants were age 50 or older when the study
began. . . . <click here to read full
article>.
Her study suggests that regular aerobic
exercise, even starting in middle age, could be a crucial factor.
"It's never too
late to start an exercise program," she says.
