Train Smart,
Live Well and Make a Difference

Julie Rumph . .
.
First-time Marathoner
and First-time World Traveler.
While it might not be
the greatest idea to take two weeks off of training for your first
marathon for a trip, it's worth the recovery for a once in a
lifetime mission trip to Kenya. I was able to spend 12 days in July
in Salama, Kenya (about two hours southeast of Nairobi by Kenyan
roads). A team from my church provided two medical clinics and
was able to treat 941 people! A second team ministered to children
in their schools and villages, seeing thousands of kids in under a
week. As a physical therapist, I spent most of my time
screening patients for the doctor and a little time actually
providing therapy. What amazed me most, beyond the overwhelming
poverty and welcoming nature of the people, was the condition of
their feet and shoes. If they had shoes at all, there were holes in
the soles and toes protruding from the ends. There was more
than a little guilt when I returned home and picked up my new
running shoes!
The most meaningful time was spent at Hope
House, an orphanage in Nairobi that has mostly HIV+ babies that were
left at birth. I got to spend my time with Joseph, a very cute and
very quiet young man. Before our "short" flight home, we spent two
days on the Masi Mara Reserve in the southern Rift Valley on safari.
The trip was fantastic and I hope it doesn't end up being actually a
once in lifetime trip. While the bathroom situation left a lot to be
desired and the roads weren't up the SmartFix 40 standards, it was
the best experience I've ever had. I had already committed to
running the Chicago marathon for World Vision
International, which is placing this year's proceeds towards
village development and water programs in Africa. Now that
I've seen what it's like first hand, it makes it a little easier to
stay committed to the goal. Just wish it made the long runs seem
shorter!

Are excuses holding
you back from getting into shape? Are you
too busy with work and family?
Is the weather a problem?
Treadmill exercise may be
just the thing that wipes out your excuses and puts you on the road
to good health and fitness. Treadmills are great for cardiovascular
fitness, toning/building your muscles, and getting into shape.
Treadmills allow you to workout on your own terms without having to
worry about rain, snow, sleet, cars, or crazy dogs.
A major
benefit of the treadmill is that you have total control over which
way you want to exercise. You can enjoy a nice, brisk walk or you
can run up a hill, it's your choice. Quality treadmills allow you to
fully customize your workout giving you the flexibility to exercise
on your terms.
Treadmills are also very accommodating to even
the most out of shape exercisers. People with back pain, weak
ankles, and bad knees find treadmills a lot easier on the joints
than cement or concrete.
Here are just some of the treadmill
benefits you can expect to receive while regularly exercising on a
treadmill:
► Safety. Treadmills provide a safe
environment for an individual to enjoy a nice leisurely walk or jog
without having to worry about dogs, cars, bikes or mean
people. ► Provides a range of customized programs.
Advanced treadmills come with built in training programs that can be
fully customized. You can "program" your treadmill according to what
your physical needs are. ► Heart rate monitors. Advanced
treadmills come with heart rate monitors making your workouts more
effective and scientific. ► Shock absorbent. A lot of the
newer treadmills are more forgiving on the knees and joints than
cement or concrete. ► Exercise feedback. A quality
treadmill will tell you how many calories you've burned, how far
you've traveled and how fast you're jogging. ► Workout
variety. A treadmill has plenty of variety for just about everyone
out there. The treadmill has what you want and when you want
it.

treadmills? Visit Fitness Systems store
