| Dear *****, |
|
Are you MAD? That is
Making A
Difference.
 Do you recognize this young
lady? This is our little Anna Celia, now 7 years
old. All along, her one wish has been to donate her beautiful
long strawberry red hair to the Locks of Love. She felt strongly
about her potential gift to another child in need. She stayed
true to her wish and this past Friday, before leaving for summer
camp, she gave more than 10 inches of her beautiful hair to Locks of
Love. Her wish was to make a difference in the life of
another child. I say she made a difference, a big one.
 As we set our sight
towards the summer, our goal is to continue to make our mark on the
East Tennessee community and from what I have seen in the last few
months, I dare say, we are being successful. But we want to do
more and I know we can do more.
Our No Boundaries Begin to Run 5K with more than 20
participants is near graduation in July. We have kicked off
our Triathlon 201 training for an Olympic Distance triathlon in
August with more than another 20 participants. We are seeing
referrals as far as Cookeville, Maryville, Clinton, and further
away. Despite the economy, we are true to our
mission.
Our Fitlosophy is a strong answer to the economy.
You can make fitness a priority without scarifying your purse.
Proper fit saves. Train smart, live well,
and make a difference!.

Side
Stitches .
. . Don't you just hate when that happens?
A side stitch is basically a
cramp in the diaphragm which is a large, muscular membrane. The
diaphragm helps to push air in and out of the lungs while breathing.
Any runner can get a side stitch, and about 70% do. It can be more
common for a new runner who is just learning the proper techniques
of breathing, pace and diet as they work to increase mileage and
endurance.
When you inhale, your lungs fill with air and
force your diaphragm downward. Conversely, when you exhale your
lungs contract and your diaphragm rises. This pattern of rising and
falling occurs quite rapidly when you're running and most side
stitches occur on the right hand side.
So what do you do out
on your run when one of these strike? ►
Slow down - especially if you are new to a program, out of condition
and exercising at too high of a level can cause you to breathe
quicker and shallower. ► Try to breathe deeply and
slowly, expanding the belly as well as the upper chest. Or try
to grunt as you exhale (trying to force the diaphragm out of its
taut position). ►
Make an effort to exhale when your foot on the opposite side of your
stitch hits the ground. If the right side has the stitch, EXHALE
each time the left foot hits the ground. The stitch should go away
in less than 2 minutes. ►
Try to eat no sooner than one hour before your run and keep your
snack or meal on the light side. ► Drink before exercise;
dehydration can increase muscle cramps ►
Massage the side stitch - massage can increase the blood flow to an
area and help to alleviate the stitch and that sharp
pain. ►
Stop and walk if the pain is too intense and start running again
when comfortable.
We hope these tips help to manage your side
stitch if and when it
arises!
