Cross Training . . It Is for
Everyone
If you are a runner who has a
one track mind of 'the more miles the better', listen up. Most
athletes have their own schedule of events for each race season and
typically, have an idea of how many miles they need to run each week
in order to reach, and be successful in, those goals.
You
may be in great shape for the sort of exercise you do routinely. But
if that's all you do, you may be setting yourself up for injury or
mental burnout and that is not a good way to get fit. What can help
prevent injury and burnout? . . . Cross
training!
After months of the same movements your
body becomes extremely efficient performing those specific
movements, and while that is great for competition, it limits the
amount of overall fitness you possess and reduces the actual
conditioning you get while training. Rather than continuing to
improve, you simply maintain a certain level of fitness. Cross
training is also beneficial in reducing the risk of injury from
repetitive strain or overuse.
Many people use cross training
in the form of a warm up for a walk or run. Early in a run and
during this cross training time, your body's core and muscles have
some time to physically warm-up. Early in this "warming process"
your body is preparing by over compensating respiratory and heart
rate for what it anticipates is around the next corner (flight
response), ie. a track workout, recovery run, or something else.
After adequately warming up, your central nervous system sends a
signal to your heart and lungs and basically says, 'worry not'. The
reason some people have the perception of running "easier" after
getting off the bike or in another form of cross-training, is due to
your body's ability to effectively handle the demands of the current
activity (lactate buffering).
Using cross training as a warm
up is basically positioning you to start your runs with a hot
engine. Your muscles are warm but most importantly your body is
effectively buffering lactate. Lactate is what makes your legs feel
"loaded up" or like dead weight during especially hard workouts. A
warm body can can effectively and efficiently buffer lactate at an
aerobic pace.
Everyone can benefit from cross training, both
in the form of a workout and in the form of a high quality warm up.
Performing multiple sports in one day makes it very apparent how
your running has profited from the dynamics of other sports.
Benefits
of Cross Training: ►
Reduces boredom in exercise ►
Allows you to be flexible about training
needs ►
Produces a higher level of all around
conditioning ►
Conditions the entire body ►
Reduces risk of injury ►
Work some muscles while others rest and
recover ►
Can continue to train if injured ►
Improves your skill, agility and balance (core
strength)
Cross Training
Exercises: ►
Running ►
Swimming ►
Cycling ►
Rowing ►
Stair Climbing ►
Jumping Rope ►
Skating ►
Skiing ►
Yoga, Pilates ►
Strength training (free wights, machines, calisthenics,
etc.)
This list is certainly only the tip of the iceberg when
it comes to cross training. There are numerous activities out there
that can get you started on your road to cross training!
