Dear *****,
|
July was a great month as Cheryl
and I celebrated our 21st anniversary. It feels like yesterday
(well, actually March 8, 1981) when we started
dating.
Cheryl, Anna, and I would like to thank everyone who
has welcomed us into our new home. Through Fleet
Feet Sports, we will continue to bring the message of
Fitlosophy (TM) to our East Tennessee community. The second
half of the year will be an exciting one. So stay tuned
as the best is yet to come.

Makes a Difference

Day
1: walk 20 miles .... Day 2: walk 20 more miles .... Day 3: walk
another 20 miles ....
----->
Total = 60 miles in 3 days.
Cindy Ross walks and walks. When you meet her,
you can sense the urgency in her step. She is a woman on a mission.
Her mission is to raise awareness and donations for the fight
against breast cancer. She plans on walking 60 miles in 3 days in
memory of her sisters, Barbara, Kathy, and Pam; and in honor of
others currently fighting this disease. Her effort is in support of
the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
As a full-figured woman, her
choices for technical gear were limited, until she came across the Moving Comfort line that
brings together style, color, and function, all in womens' sizes
from 1X to 3X. Now when she walks she enjoys every step, in
any climate. In these pictures Cindy is sporting in an MCW Swift Cap
Shirt and MCW Journey Shorts.
You can check out her website
at http://www.the3day.org/atlanta07/cindyross.
There you can learn more about her, her challenge, and ways you can
help her reach her fundraising goals in fighting breast cancer.

How long should my
shoes last?
The easy answer is, "about 300-500
miles," because the mid-sole of the shoe (the part that does all of
the support and absorption work) slowly compresses. After about
300-500 miles it compresses to the point that it really doesn't do
its job very effectively any longer. However, there are so many
variables when it comes to the correct answer.
Where
do you run? The surface you train on has a direct effect on
the durability of your shoes. The harder the surface, the quicker
your shoes will wear down. Concrete (i.e. sidewalks) is the worst
possible thing to run on. Running a majority on concrete will likely
decrease the durability of your shoes by at least 10%. More
importantly, it can also dramatically increase your injury rate, as
your body is required to absorb more of the shock because your shoe
can't absorb as much as it is designed to. Asphalt is a little
better, as it is a softer material, but it still requires your shoes
to work hard. Also it is typically more abrasive, so the outer-sole will typically show
more signs of wear earlier on. Trails and other soft surfaces are
the best to run on because the softer surface helps to absorb more
of the shock, so your body takes less of a pounding. However, shoes
worn on trails can wear out faster than shoes worn on other
surfaces. The outer-sole and mid- sole will show very little sign of
wearing, but the upper takes a beating given the conditions on the
trail.
Where
do you store your shoes? The location where your running
shores are stored can also decrease their durability. Keeping your
shoes in the garage is beneficial in making your home a more
pleasant smelling place, but it can cause your shoes to wear out
faster. If the shoes stay really cold in the winter, the rubbers and
other synthetic parts will not flex as easily, which can lead to
micro-tears, not to mention making your feet cold and your body ache
from absorbing the shock because the rubber is too cold to absorb it
for you. Keeping your shoes in the garage, or even worse, the trunk
of your car, during the hot summer will also decrease their
durability, as the heat will cause the rubbers and glues to become
too soft causing the mid-sole to compress at a much higher
rate.
What
is you body mass? The last key factor is personal weight. If
a person that weighs 120 pounds and a person that weighs 200 pounds
runs the same weekly mileage on the same surface in the same style
of shoe, the person that weighs 200 pounds will most likely need to
replace their shoes more often. Why? We generate about 2-5 times our
weight each time one foot hits the ground while running. That means
that the 120 pound person will generate between 240 and 600 pounds
of force each time one foot hits the ground. The 200 pound person
will generate between 400 and 1000 pounds of force each time. The
more force generated on a frequent basis the quicker the shoe will
wear out.
Keeping these little tid-bits of info stored away
will hopefully help you realize when your shoes are worn to the
point of no return. |
Fleet Feet
Staff Supports the Community
|
What we define
as our mission, we search for in our staff. Nicole Howe has
demonstrated that every step of the way since the first day she
began working at Fleet Feet Sports. Here in Nicole's own
words:
"In September I will be
part of a team running in the Blue Ridge Relay. As far as we know,
we will be the first All-Female team to compete in the event. My
team and I have decided to make our race even more meaningful by
taking on the additional challenge of raising funds to support the
Avon Foundation Need for Speed Against Domestic Violence National
Series.
Every year, up to 10 million children witness some
form of domestic violence, and wish they could run for their lives.
Most often, they can't, which is why I've accepted the challenge to
run for them. I'm very excited about participating because I know it
will make a real difference to the millions of women and children,
and help to end the cycle of domestic violence.
Please help
to support me by contributing generously. You can make your donation
online by simply clicking on the link at the bottom of this message.
Whatever you can give will help. It all adds up! I greatly
appreciate your support and will keep you posted on my
progress."
So if you want to find out more about her
challenge or simply want to support her, go to her personal page. You will be
impressed. We are! |
