Dear *****,

|
After my last newsletter, I received this reply from a good and
wise friend: "If hard work, enthusiasm and
innovation (FITLOSOPHY) are any measure, you're sure to have GREAT
SUCCESS in your new venture!" I hope I can live up
to these standards and I will do my best.
Our circle of friends is growing. "Happy Feet" Team is out
there training for their triathlon. We started a new corporate
wellness challenge and Team TCS is well ahead of pace as they
fight office stress and open their horizon with an active
lifestyle. And we had a night of learning and socializing for
the ladies.
Live Well.

| Upcoming
Events |
In the month of July, we kicked off two new
programs:
1. Triathlon 101 - Build to sprint
distance triathlon
We designed an 8-week training
program around the Springbrook Sprint Triathlon to be held on
Aug 11th. our goal is to promote the sport of triathlon to
newcomers who are looking for a new challenges. During the
next 8 weeks, we will take our group of athletes and help them
become tri-athletes. Check here if you want to
find out more about our training programs.
 2. Tennessee Cancer Specialists
Corporate Wellness Challenge
Not every one is up to training for a triathlon. So we
designed a 6-week wellness program to challenge the
hard working employees of the Tennessee Cancer Specialists
group. Spread across multiple offices, these health
professionals give much of themselves every day. It is time to
give back.
Through education and communication, our goal is to show that
wellness is achievable in small
doses. Our incentivized program will help nurses,
office workers, and doctors train toward a 5 kilometer
walk. Check here if you want to
find out more about our corporate wellness programs.
Stay tuned for future events such as
our Triathlon 201 program, our long distance running
program, and even another wellness program right around the
corner. If you are interested is starting one in your group,
please contact
us. |
| At the
Races... |
In this section, we usually talk about
racing and major accomplishments. Well, I can't find
anything more impressive than a new arrival in the Fleet Feet
family. Doug showed up at the store, grinning from ear to ear after
the arrival of his new boy. "...Here is a picture of my new
baby boy! My wife Kori and I couldn't be any happier. I
will be bringing my wife down soon for you to fit her into a good
pair of walking shoes. Thanks for everything and I will talk
to you soon. He looks pretty good for only being 1 week
old. Future runner and champion
soccer player." So congratulations mom &
dad. It is worth mentioning that dad was so excited that
he forgot to send me his son's name. So for now we'll call him

| Plantar
Fasciitis - What is that nagging arch
pain??
Plantar fasciitis is the most common cause of heel pain
in runners and in sports that involve intensive running.
Walkers are at risk too. Plantar Fasciitis is an inflammation
of the plantar fascia, which is the elastic support system for
the bottom of your foot. It consists of thick bands of
connective tissue that originate on the front and inner side
of the calcaneus (heel bone) and fan out toward the toes
connecting to bones just beyond the ball of your foot. Pain is
usually most prevalent in the heel or the rear portion of the
arch.
Plantar fasciitis is very painful during the first couple
of steps after awaking in the morning, but tends to subside
significantly until it increases again by the end of the day.
The reason this occurs is that during the night, the plantar
fascia begins to heal, but not completely. When the first step
is taken in the morning, the site where the healing began
becomes disrupted and aggravated once again.
There are many causes of plantar fasciitis. They
include:
- Shoes without adequate support for the arch
- Playing or running on hard, unyielding surfaces (e.g.
concrete, asphalt)
- Abnormally flat or high arches
- Abnormal foot pronation (arch drops too much during
gait)
- Tight calf muscles
- Sudden increases in activity level
- Sudden weight gain
- Occupations requiring prolonged standing
Treatment of plantar fasciitis often will require various
methods to completely treat the condition. As for all overuse
injuries, rest or modification (cutting back) of the activity
is required to allow healing to occur. Use pain as your guide.
If an activity increases or maintains the heel pain then it
needs to be reduced or ceased. If the surface upon which you
are active is very hard then change to a softer surface which
will provide more cushioning and less shock to your feet.
Ensure you are wearing the proper footwear. Worn out or
poorly constructed shoes will cause your feet to absorb more
shock and to move abnormally while you are walking or running.
When selecting a shoe, ensure it feels great from the start.
You should not have to "break in" a shoe! You may want to try
over-the-counter shoe inserts to support your arches.
Sometimes a heel lift may decrease tension through the bottom
of your foot. Remember, shoes should be replaced every 300-500
miles of use, or every 6 months. Treating plantar fasciitis
immediately is very important. If the above conservative
treatment approaches do not help then it is always best to
seek medical advice to ensure complete treatment and
recovery.
If you are suffering from plantar fasciitis stop in and
discuss it with us and let us show you how we might be able to
help alleviate your discomfort and speed up your
recovery. | | |
