| New Products - We are done yet with new introductions... |
New Shoes . . .
Mizuno Ascend - Built on a stability platform similar to the Elixir, these trail shoes are as good on the road as they are on the trails. Flexible yet supportive, they provide plenty of stability and comfort when you hit those trails.
Brooks Infinity - A new guidance category by Brooks, these shoes are meant to fill a niche for the midfoot striker who wants just the right level of support with the most cushioning in the forefoot area. You have to try them on.
Montrail Continental Divide & Streak - As Montrail refocuses their attention on the trail market, they have limited the number of product offering in this category. We are bringing in something for every runner, needing just cushioning or an extra bit of stability. And to take into account the narrower fit of the Continental Divide, we are bringing it in width as well.
Montrail Molikai & Molikini sandals - If ever wearing sandals could be considered therapeutic, this would be it. Those who have been plagued with plantar fasciitis know what I am talking about. The heat-moldable sandals (Molikia for men and Molikini for women) are meant to provide the best fit in a standal without sacrificing the look. The vibrant colors combine with the medial build-up to provide the best of both world when wearing sandals is the fashionable thing to do. And for the more subdued, we do have the black color.
Polar Heart Rate Monitors Why an HRM? To reach your fitness goals you need to train at the right intensity and the heart rate is an accurate measurement of your intensity/exertion level. A Polar HRM is an easy accurate way to continuously measure your heart rate.
Triathlon Season is upon us We have teamed up with several of our vendors to bring you the best of what is out there. Men's and women's tri tops and bottoms from 2XU, Sugoi, and Zoot. If your need wetsuit, let us know. We want to make sure you have what you need when you sign up for that dream event, whether it is your first olympic distance triathlon or your next ironman distance event. No matter what, we are here.
Canyon Racing Belt I don't understand why runners put pins through their expensive gear when they can have a racing belt with their number. We have them and now you can have them not just for your next triathlon bur also for your next run. |
| At the Races |
New Year's Day Run Congratulations to all those who ran the New Year's Day Run 5K. The race results can be found here. Fleet Feet Sports was proud to be a supporter of this race by providing finish area water & gatorade.

PF Chang Rock-n-Roll marathon, Phoenix, AZ (Jan 13, 2008) - Great friendship start in the most unusual places. Kim & Kate started running together last Spring to train for the upcoming triathlon season. Each was looking for a friend with whom to train while finding solace from every day pressures. When life's stressor grew, their friendship got stronger. Their latest running endeavor was training for the Phoenix marathon. On Jan 13th, hand in hand, they crossed the finish line of the Rock and Roll Marathon in an impressive time of 3:36, each earning a qualifying slot to the renowned Boston Marathon. So Kate & Kimberly, congratulations on your achievement and thank you for allowing us to be a part of this journey. We look forward to hearing from your Boston trip.
Disney Marathon, Orlando, FL (Jan 13, 2008) - At age 61, Lenda Sherrel, has not slowed down. I had the privilege to coach her to her first marathon walk in Phoenix, AZ in 2007 and she has continued her quest for excellence. She wrote me about her experience at Disney Marathon. "This event was a blast - way too much fun!! I developed some fairly significant blisters at mile 20, which really cut into my time. Up to that point, I was right on track at a 15-minute mile pace. The only thing I can figure out is that it was an extremely humid day - 95% at the start. There was just no place for the moisture to go. And, I was right at the end of my shoe-life. I probably tried to get more miles out of the shoe than I should have. Also, the heat really kicked in at about mile 20 - really the "perfect storm". Fortunately, Jim was there with moleskin. [Jim, Lenda's husband, has been a true supporter. A retired physician, Jim has taken the hobby of watching out for Lenda and he is doing a great job!]
Anyhow, I managed to push through the last 6 miles and finish and get the Mickey Mouse medal - really a cool medal. And, I was really proud of myself for enduring to the end!!
If you have any thoughts about avoiding blisters, I would appreciate your advice. I definitely want to do this event again, but don't want to deal with the distraction of blisters!" Lenda, here is some help for those blisters ... an article from a previous newsletter: Blisters Can Be Avoided
Calhoun 10 miler, Knoxville, TN (Jan 26, 2008) - Congratulations to our Long Distance 101 Training group who trained hard for this event. Two personal bests were recorded by Todd Thomas (1:28:53 - 8:54 min/mile) and Bruno Tateossian (1:26:04 - 8:37 min/mile). The race results can be found here.

| Great Athletes Come in all Shapes & Sizes... |
Rick Freer - During the day, Rick Freer works on heating and cooling units. But early in the morning, you can find him training for his first half marathon on an elliptical machine. But he has not always been this dedicated to his health.
When the scale tips at 308 lbs, you know it is time for action. That's what Rick thought when he stood on his scale one morning and had to push on to a ledge even to get it to register at 308. Working on his feet all day, he knew that his livelihood depended on his health. It was time for action. Rick and his wife, Eva, embarked on a series of steps to change their ways. And changed, they did.
Two weeks in South Carolina at a "fat farm", as Rick jokingly calls it, got them on the right path. When you talk to Rick, you realize that he has a vary balanced view of life and a contagious humor. I think that is how he chose the half marathon distance, a challenging yet achievable goal. And believe me, he is on his way to succeed. He is working with a personal trainer to develop strength and doing his elliptical at least 3 times a week to build his aerobic base. He has already gotten close to 1.5 hours and feels that 3 - 3.5 hours is well within his reach. Congratulations to Rick and Eva on their commitment to health.
Sara Masters - Sara was chosen to be a member of the 2008 Covenant Health Marathon Team. Diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes 14 years ago, this school teacher has taken charge of her health in recent years, running more and eating healthier. She has run three half marathons. Sara hopes to inspire her students and set an example for others who are experiencing life with diabetes, letting them know that if she can do it, so can they.
I first got to know Sara when she signed on for our Triathlon 101- Build to a Sprint Distance Triathlon training program. What attracted me to Sara was her constant smile, even when things were tough. She proved to be a good swimmer, a competitive biker, and a strong runner. She does not let her diabetes define what she can or cannot do. She decides on her own terms. I look forward to working with her in getting more of her kids introduced to her passion of running. After all, "Sara's kids" has a such a nice ring to it.

Shin Splints
Aches and pains are common for runners, but a serious or nagging injury can be painful and interrupt your training or fitness routine. Often runners come in to Fleet Feet and are complaining that they have shin splints. I thought it appropriate to define shin splints and how they relate to overuse and more often, shoe wear.
The full name for shin splints is 'Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome' which simply defines the condition as a syndrome in which stress has caused an injury to the medial (inside) part of the tibia (lower leg). It is very common in athletes who pound the legs - runners, sprinters, figure skaters, gymnasts, etc. It is a typical overuse injury. It does not occur overnight but over a period of time during which the athlete has been pounding the legs.
Proper footwear is essential for anyone involved with running. Figure skaters, gymnasts, etc. don't have the luxury of choosing ideal footwear with adequate cushioning so, if you're a runner, exercise your ability to pick a good pair of shoes.
The Anatomy:
The pain associated with shin splints corresponds to the area where the soleus muscle of the calf attaches to the shin bone, or tibia. If you've ever whacked your shin, you know that there's not a lot of meat on the front of the tibia. It's really just skin over the bone. The majority of the muscles attach to the back of the tibia. If you put your fingers on the front of the tibia, right on the bony ridge where you don't have any padding, and then roll inwards and you'll be able to almost feel behind the tibia. It's important to understand that sometimes shin splints will present the same signs and symptoms as a stress fracture in the tibia. It is also thought that shin splints can progress to stress fractures if not treated properly. So it is very important that if you think you have shin splints, and they are not responding to rest or treatment, seek professional advise.
Signs and Symptoms:
Pain located on the inside (medial) part of the lower leg Increased pain during running or weight bearing exercise Lingering pain after cessation of exercise May be associated with tight calf muscles What To Do About It:
Proper footwear is essential. Running in worn out shoes is often the triggering incident in runners or running in shoes the do not match your foot's biomechanics. Sometimes orthotics or over the counter inserts are beneficial. Choose running surface carefully. Softer is better, use this progression: Bark Chips Treadmill Grass Packed Dirt Asphalt Concrete Steel (Yikes!) Indoor tracks with tight turns adds increased stress. Check your training log - have you doubled your mileage, added hills too quickly, rapidly increased training?
Return to running gradually. Build up slowly to pre-injury training
level. Use this progression to returning to road running, spending 1 to 2 weeks at each level (ie 2 weeks water running, 2 weeks cycling, etc):
Water Running Cycling Stair Master Treadmill Road Running. Proper stretching of the muscles. Ice, Ice, Ice. |
